With Thanksgiving just days away, a Utica organization is helping provide for those in need.

Monday, the Johnson Park Center gave away tens of thousands of pounds of food for the community.

“There's a huge need just to get extra food,” said Johnson Park Center Chief Operating Officer Reverend Ursula Meier. “And Thanksgiving is so important for everybody, and how can you have a Thanksgiving if you don't have plenty to share? And we are glad that we can be part of that."

The organization gave away varying foods, including meats, bread and fruit.

Meier and volunteers say turnout for these events, which are organized monthly, continues to grow.

This food pantry comes shortly after a grant was awarded to the organization through the Homeless Housing Assistance Program.

The $4.5 million award will go towards constructing residential and community complexes throughout the Johnson Park area.
