FEMA is in the Mohawk Valley this week, assessing the damage caused by the Halloween storm.

For FEMA funding, $29.6 million worth of damage statewide needs to be found. In total, 18 counties are being looked at.

"We've mobilized our teams, joined up with the county and the state folks and we're out coordinating our efforts throughout those 18 counties," said FEMA Region 2 Public Assistance Branch Chief Christopher Hartnett.

On day two of FEMA representatives assessing the damage in Herkimer County, they paid a visit to collapsed bridge on Gray-Wilmurt Road. Hartnett said if there's more damage like this, it's likely the FEMA threshold will be met.

"If we're looking at damage like this through 18 counties," Hartnett said. "I'm sure we'll be close to that number if not well above it, and I can't tell you yea or nay we're going to get a declaration out of it. That's going to be based on the information we gather."

Once a federal declaration is made, the money will go to the state to manage the grant for its sub-grantees. It's a reimbursement grant.

However many neighbors in communities across the Mohawk Valley are hoping for buyouts.

"That would come well after the declaration is issued or declared. It might be done through CDBG money but it doesn't come at this stage in the game," Hartnett said.

Representatives plan to wrap up their assessments in 10 days.

Governor Cuomo is demanding federal help from FEMA. He said federal officials need to "step up and deliver".
