You see a lot when working with animals for about a decade.
The Herkimer County Humane Society's Shelter manager said this was one of the more upsetting cases she's seen.
"It's a sad situation. I do think that it could have been worse, but the dogs definitely were neglected," said Shelter Manager Melissa DeMartino.
The shelter took in eight dogs and four puppies from a Herkimer County property in August. Some of the dogs didn't have fur and were infested with parasites.
One dog was dead when staff responded, and another had to be euthanized.
"I mean mostly they have Demodex Mange. They must have been chewing on rocks because their teeth are completely worn down,"DeMartino said.
It can be emotionally taxing for people who work in animal care to take in animals suffering from neglect, but this is a success story.
"It definitely breaks your heart a little bit but I think it's absolutely rewarding at the same time because then you can see the dogs progress and how well they've become and how much healthier they get, and then when somebody adopts them, it's just so great to see that you just helped out these animals," she said.
The dogs need more training, but are ready to find their forever homes. If you're interested, they're at the Herkimer County Humane Society.
