In North Syracuse, the big red sign just isn't enough. So the police department found another way to get drivers to stop: adding 'Stop Means Stop' signs.
Sergeant Jeff Tripp says they've been a success.
"Most people love it," he said. "They're looking for the deterrence when we can't be there."
The idea started in Camillus. When Police Chief Steven Rotunno left the Camillus Police Department and took the chief position in North Syracuse, he brought 'Stop Means Stop' to the village. The signs went up in areas where people complained about cars running through stop signs.
"Obviously we wish we could sit at every stop sign, but manpower-wise that's just not feasible," he said.
Tripp wishes he could do more to enforce traffic laws.
"Would we like to spend the money for another officer to do traffic? I would love it."
But since adding the signs, he's already seen a difference.
"There's a lot of people that walk our village," he said. "And we want them to be safe. Back to School is coming up. We want the kids to have a safe time getting on the bus, off the bus. And to start school off on a good note."
School in North Syracuse starts next Thursday September 5th.
