A beach on Cazenovia Lake is closed after blue-green algae was spotted in the water. So that raises the question - are we in for another summer of harmful algal blooms across the Finger Lakes?

In Skaneateles, the water is clear right now. But in each of the last two summers, we've seen harmful algal blooms develop.

The lake provides drinking water for about 200,000 homes and Onondaga County officials say they are prepared for the worst case scenario.

They say it's important to stay vigilant.

"Anything we can do as a community to reduce phosphorus and think about how we're landscaping our homes,” said Skaneateles Lake Association Executive Director Frank Moses. “And think about how we can manage the streams by our homes."

Experts say harmful algal blooms form during hot days when the water is still.
