Artists are unleashing their inner Picasso this weekend. Saturday, there was a sidewalk chalk competition in Auburn, and it was open to people of all ages.

“I'm going to do it out of my head and see what I come up with," said Anthony Clubine, a Jordan resident.

It's easy to see Anthony is an artist — specifically a muralist.

"Chalk isn’t my medium," Anthony said. “But it's fun to work with."

By sketching, swiping, and blending, he shares his love of art with his daughters. For the Clubines, chalk festivals have become a family affair.

"I think it's nice because it’s a medium we can all do together," said his daughter, Sabrina.

"I'm not a camper, so we had a weekend with nothing to do and saw Sylvan Beach was having one,” Anthony said. “We ended up going there and all of us had so much fun.”

Saturday, they are two of a few dozen people coloring the sidewalks in Auburn.

"Having good chalk helps,” Sabrina said. “Like over the years, we've collected better chalk, I guess, so we have a lot to use. And just taking your time and blending everything."

It's the second year of the festival and the artists have six hours to finish their masterpieces, drawing on each other for inspiration.

"Usually if I do art by myself, I don't really have the motivation to finish it, but if I'm here it's a lot easier to actually finish something," Sabrina said.

"You know, it's the best father-daughter bonding, even though she's way over there this time,” Anthony said. “Usually we're all in a group and we have a ball."

The sidewalk chalk competition is part of Auburn's Sizzling Summer Party. The Saturday market runs weekly through the end of October.
