The Uptown Theatre in Utica has become a comedy hotspot, even as renovations continue.

The lobby has been re-painted, a new carpet put in, and work continues on the main theatre.

Space is being used for open mics, a variety of shows, meetings, and classes. Many of the classes focus on comedy.

A new class is starting on June 15 called, "Improv for Veterans". It'll be taught by an Army veteran who enjoys doing stand-up and improv.

"It's a new opportunity and a new outlet for someone who is a veteran. If they thought about doing something creative or something with comedy or performing that there is a supportive space," said Uptown Improv Company Instructor Cortland Cloos.

"I want people to know that the Uptown is open. We're not at full capacity yet. We're a 1,500 seat theater, we're going to be, at least. But in the meantime, we're making use of the space we have," said Uptown Improv Company Co-Founder Devin Mahoney.
