POLAND, N.Y. -- Poland Central School has been closed since a fire Tuesday morning, but staff returned for a partial day to wrap up the week.

The fire started in the basement, in a storage area under sixth-grade classrooms. There's no word yet on the cause.

The sixth-grade wing is blocked off, so those teachers are moving the materials they need to other rooms. Some are preparing new binders and notebooks for students, just in case supplies in their lockers are damaged.

It's too soon to say when students will return to the building, but the goal is to be ready.

"Just like we tell our kids, there's going to be times in life where you have adversity and you've got to learn how to deal with it, and I think that we can be an example for our school community and our kids here that when stuff like this happens that you have to pull together and you have to make the best of it and you have to keep moving forward," said Principal Greg Cuthbertson.

"We're removing contents now that are damaged and we're gonna start the process of ice blasting to get the soot off the walls and then we'll seal evreything and they can move back in," said Claim Masters Owner John Strachen.

They're getting some help. Spectrum News was told the Holland Patent School District loaned 50 desks.

Poland's Grand March for prom was moved to West Canada Valley.
