A NASA astronaut will be landing in the Mohawk Valley this Friday, for the unveiling of the Gregory Jarvis Memorial. On Friday, May 3rd, a memorial will be displayed at the front entrance of the Herkimer County and Court Facility, on 301 N. Washington Street.
Jarvis was raised in the Herkimer County, in the small town of Mohawk. He was a payload specialist for NASA who lost his life when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch, in 1986.
Jarvis graduated from Mohawk High School, which later became named after him in his honor.
Residents are now excited for another piece of history to make a landing in the Mohawk Valley.
"I think that it is great and the involvement of the students number one signing the petition and learning about who he was and what he did and wanting to remember him,” said Mitch Pezdek, from the Mohawk Valley.
The memorial will include, among other things, a shuttle era helmet, flight suit with Gregory Jarvis' name tag, and a scale size model of a NASA space shuttle.
The memorial will be revealed at 10:00 a.m.
