UTICA, N.Y. -- A clip on "The Simpsons" had several scenes that were meant to depict the Mohawk Valley, but some say the scenes were more than just negative, they were inaccurate.
It was part of a song Homer Simpson sang about a place that he says was quote "never that great".
"Someone did share it on social media, and I did view it, and I am offended by it," said JoAnne Suppa, a RiverHills Properties Real Estate Salesperson. Suppa and her family live in Utica.
Suppa is not alone. Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri said the clip's depictions of Utica were wrong.
"First of all, they showed about the population. We're one of the only cities that I know that the population is continuing to grow so they were wrong there, and secondly they showed the downtown with the 'closed and still closed,' well obviously it's not our downtown," Palmieri said.
He said all of Utica's downtown buildings have been sold.
There are mixed reviews about the clip online, but in-person, everyone Spectrum News spoke with said the video was too negative.
"Anything that is done with Utica, we like to have the publicity but we need not negative, we need positive publicity," said Ed Lasek, the owner of Ed Lasek Optical in Utica.
Mayor Palmieri and other Uticans feel like the city is in a good spot right now.
"There's a lot of excitement and energy going on in Utica and I'm pro-Utica, born and raised here my whole life, and I'd just like to see more positive said than negative," Lasek said.
From its specialty foods to unique stores and restaurants, as well as its proximity to the Adirondacks, many feel like there's a lot to celebrate about Utica.
"Homer Simpson, maybe you can get yourself a tag and run the Boilermaker this year and see what Utica is all about because we are a very strong community," Suppa said.
The Great New York State Fair is inviting "The Simpsons" writers to come and check everything out, and will even provide them with a basket of New York products.
State Senator Rachel May also chimed in. She said "The Simpsons" had it wrong, that Upstate is great, and has been tweeting about why she thinks so.
