An Oswego man has been issued tickets for causing damage to the Hinmansville Bridge in Phoenix last week.

According to New York State Police, Larry Willis, 62, was recently driving his commercial roll-off truck east on County Route 46 when he failed to lower the hydraulic rails on the back of his truck as he went over the bridge, resulting in the damage. Steel was completely ripped apart from both the top and sides of the bridge.

"It was about 4:30 in the morning. I was just getting to sleep. I heard a loud crash. It sounded like a rollup door because we get a lot of tractor trailers here. It's a very busy road," resident Thomas Mills recently told Spectrum News.

Willis was ticketed for leaving the scene of a property damage accident and over-weight vehicle.

His truck was taken out of service.

The New York state DOT owns and maintains the bridge as it expands a portion of the Barge Canal. They say it will be closed for several weeks pending inspection.

"It's the only shortcut between Fulton and Phoenix, so you're talking instead of a half of mile across, now you've got six miles or more to get to the other round," Mills said.
