In May, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department will be sending a team to compete in the 2019 Mock Prison Riot competition in West Virginia.
The four day competition brings law enforcement teams together from all over the world to learn from and compete with one another. Sunday, we got a chance to look into one of their training sessions.
The officers practiced crowd control formations they would use in emergency riot situations, along with team building workouts to prepare them for the strength competitions and obstacle courses.
More than just winning awards, the team says the Mock Prison Riot helps them find ways to improve, while also showing off what they do really well.
"It was just a great thing to see a team from Michigan, who had 40 people down there, and they were just an impressive show of force. They came to us and said 'wow I really like the way you did XYZ,'" said Lt. Christopher Koppe. "We were sitting there thinking 'we really liked the way you did ABC.'"
