An investigation has developed into the Onondaga County medical examiner's office.

Just weeks after Doctor Robert Stoppacher was fired, the District Attorney's office is looking into the allegations against him.

Stoppacher was accused of defacing a body in March of 2017. That accusation, along with a photo, was sent to the state health department, which deemed the claims were unfounded.

Then, in November of 2018 a different photo with the same claim was sent to the deceased person's family. The county immediately investigated and fired stoppacher, not realizing the state health department had investigated a similar claim.

Friday medical examiner technician Tyler Strutz was arrested. He's been charged with a misdemeanor count, of making a punishable false written statement.

Investigators say he signed a sworn affidavit claiming he saw stoppacher defacing the deceased body. District attorney investigators believe that claim was false.

A grand jury will continue to look into the accusations and more charges and arrests could be coming in the case.

The county released a statement addressing the firing of Dr. Stoppacher on Friday.  A spokesman says there were several claims of inappropriate behavior, not just one.

"While we will not comment on the specifics of those actions out of respect for the persons involved, the public can rest assured that action taken in regards to the employment of Dr. Stoppacher was swift, appropriate and in line with the standards all Onondaga County employees are held to," the statement read.
