Matthew Norris, 16, died this weekend when the van he was driving crashed into a tree in the town of Onondaga.

Deputies say speed and lack of experience were factors in the crash.

Norris was about to start his junior year at Marcellus High School.

Principal John Durkee says it's not just the school that's mourning him.

"You can’t separate the school from the community; they're one in the same," Durkee said. "When the school loses, when the family loses, the entire community hurts."

Norris was an active member of the Mustangs football and wrestling teams.

His wrestling coaches say he will be irreplaceable.

"There's going to be a hole on that team this year without Matt there," Durkee said. "He was a large part of that team, his example that he set for the team with his grit and tenacity were unbelievable."

Marcellus has made counselors available to students. They will be at the school Tuesday until 3 p.m.

And to help the family, Principal Durkee says the people of Marcellus will be there for them.

"In a time like this when tragedy happens, the family knows they have a ton of family and extended family and friends and community that they can turn to for support,” said Durkee.
