LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. -- Where three houses once stood there's now destruction, and a shaken community. That's because of an explosion that happened on West Main Street in Little Falls, Wednesday afternoon. Fire from the explosion ultimately destroyed two other houses, and damaged buildings along the street.
"The explosion lifted her off the ground," said Melanie Zobrist the owner of Mel's Place and KozMelPOUNDFIT. "She was inside on the second floor. Windows did blow out on the third,"
Officials confirmed the explosion impacted other areas.
"We did have power outages," said Little Falls Fire Chief Robert Parese. "We had cell towers out. It appears that everything stemmed from this explosion."
There were three non-life threatening injuries. One person was a passerby who was taken to a Syracuse hospital.
"When the explosion occurred and he started knocking on doors to warn neighbors of what was going on to try to get them out of the house to assist," said Little Falls Assistant Police Chief Ronald Petrie of the person.
Now people throughout the area are trying to show their support for those affected.
"If there's we can do to help out, Dolgeville with clothes or anything we'd be glad to help out. I'm sure of that," said Dolgeville Mayor Bruce Lyon.
"Instantly people are now, like it was a matter of an hour or two that people were already trying to get clothing or anything that could for the people that lost everything," said Zobrist.
The affected families are being aided by the American Red Cross.
Little Falls officials said the official cause is still under investigation, but as reported Wednesday, the Herkimer County Sheriff said it was believed to be a natural gas explosion.
