UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica's Corporation Counsel is reviewing a vote by the Common Council to overturn a recently-passed term limit extension.

Earlier this year, the council voted to extend term limits for the mayor, comptroller, council president and common councilors from 8 to 12 years. But Tuesday, outgoing Council-at-Large Edward Bucciero made a motion to reconsider the vote.

The law was defeated 5-4 with the help of Councilor John Jacon, who changed his previous vote.

Bucciero said he was just doing his job because his constituents were upset about the process surrounding the previous vote.

"They were furious, to be quite frank with you. Almost everybody I talked to," Bucciero said. "So, it was me just doing the job that I was elected to do, which is to represent the people of the City of Utica and to try to correct a wrong that they felt had been inflicted on them."

Jacon did not want to comment on his vote. Spectrum News reached out to the mayor's office and was told he can't comment until the Corporation Counsel's review is complete.

Both Bucciero and Jacon are being replaced on the council next year.
