Could the 2026 Winter Olympics feature sliding events in Lake Placid?
Maybe.
Right now, Lake Placid is being targeted as a "Plan B" for events like luge and bobsled. This is in case the Cortina Sliding Centre in Italy isn't ready in time. The Italian planning committee does say they are confident that work will be completed in time.
“For decades, New York State’s commitment to winter sports has kept the Olympic flame burning bright in Lake Placid," Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. "This is a testament to the investment in the legacy that we continue to provide Lake Placid and the Olympic Movement. New York State is honored to be selected to further the dialogue, and we will work closely with Fondazione Milano Cortina to discuss the planning in a detailed manner to stage the Plan B back up plan.”
Lake Placid hosted Olympics in 1932 and 1980.
Facilities there have undergone significant renovations over the last few years.
