With school out for the summer, some children are struggling to find consistent meals during the day.

In the Mohawk Valley, Franco’s Pizza in Ilion and North Utica are offering their help by serving children free meals every weekday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The No Kid Left Hungry Program gives children who come in during those hours a slice of pizza, a bag of chips and a drink. The program began earlier this month when Franco’s and Ilion shared a post on Facebook about wanting to assist children in need.

Franco’s in North Utica quickly followed, and the two restaurants estimate that they have served between 600 and 700 kids since. The number of those served continues to grow as information keeps spreading.

The co-owner of the Ilion location, Jaime Mendez, says they served roughly 50 kids Wednesday, and that the number increases daily. Both restaurants have received donations from the community for their efforts.
