High school winter sports deemed to be “high risk” won’t start at New York public schools until 2021.

The NYSPHSAA announced Tuesday that the start date for basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey, and wrestling will be January 4. Low- and moderate-risk winter sports can still start November 30.

“The NYSPHSAA membership has expressed concerns pertaining to the increase in infection rates,” NYSPHSAA Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas said in a press release Tuesday. “Minimizing risk and exposure to COVID-19 is a top priority of the Association. We continue to make these types of decisions based upon readily available information and communication with state officials.”

Different sections across the state have set their own plans for competition; Section III in Central New York, for example, won’t have sectional playoffs this winter.
