Are you ready for some football...practice?

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that the 2020 high school fall sports season can begin, but with caveat that football can only practice, for now.

What You Need To Know

  • Gov. Andrew Cuomo has approved the start of the high school fall sports season next month

  • Because it's considered a high-risk sport, football will only be allowed to practice for the time being

  • NYSPHSAA has already postponed the start date for fall sports to September 21

  • High school football has already been canceled for this fall in 17 states, including Massachusetts

The decision means that low-risk sports like tennis, field hockey, and soccer can begin practicing and playing games next month, while football will be relegated to practice only. The governor says he wants to use a "phase" approach similar to the one he used in reopening business across the state.

NYSPHSAA President Dr. Robert Zayas says he's planning to meet with Sectional directors and the COVID-19 task force Tuesday to hammer out additional guidelines. The statewide organization had already postponed the fall sports season start date to September 21.

Section III Executive Director John Rathbun told Spectrum News Monday via text message that he's awaiting guidance from the state association before making any comment.
