You may already be eyeballing those Thanksgiving leftovers in your fridge and there are some tips to remember to keep those fresh and ready to eat.

Food safety experts say the food shouldn't be left out for more than two hours after being cooked. They also say shallow containers and smaller packaged portions help cool food faster once in the fridge, and wrapping them up as air-tight as possible helps keep away bacteria.

As we get through the holiday weekend, you should consider your leftovers expired by Monday, unless you freeze them.

"You can store them in your refrigerator [for] up to four days, which is a long time, and then if you don't want to eat them right away, you can put them in a freezer bag or air-tight containers and freeze them," said Jennifer Trodden, deputy commissioner for the New York State Department of Agriculture.

When reheating your food, you want to make sure it reaches at least 165 degrees, which you can check with a kitchen thermometer.
