1. Demands for veterinarians continue, but there is optimism

According to Forbes, 66% of U.S. households own at least one pet, and more than half of New Yorkers spend more money on their dogs than themselves. Most of that money is spent in veterinary medicine, an industry that is strained. There may, however, be a light at at the end of the tunnel.

2. New York state helping Spanish speakers to quit smoking

According to data from the American Lung Society in 2022, roughly 12% of New Yorkers smoke, impacting white and Hispanic people comparatively. This is why New York State Quitline launched “Vivir sin tabaco es Vida,” a free Spanish-language texting program designed to help Hispanic and Latinx communities.

3. NTSB: Lack of oversight, driver fatigue, seat belt accessibility leading factors in deadly 2023 North Country crash

The National Traffic and Safety Board finds a lack of federal oversight, driver fatigue and seat belt accessibility were leading factors in a North Country crash last year that left six migrant workers dead. Back in January 2023, a box truck crossed over the center line on State Route 37 in the town of Louisville, in St. Lawrence County, crashing into a bus carrying 14 migrant workers.

4. Prosecutors tell New York judge they oppose effort to dismiss Trump's hush money conviction

New York prosecutors said Tuesday they'll oppose any effort to dismiss President-elect Donald Trump's hush money conviction as his sentencing looms, but they expressed some openness to delaying the case until after his impending second term.

5. Hakeem Jeffries wins reelection as House Democratic leader despite party's losses

House Leader Hakeem Jeffries won reelection Tuesday as the Democratic leader, receiving support from his colleagues despite the party's inability to win back majority control of the chamber in the November election. Jeffries of New York was chosen during an internal party vote of the House Democrats underway at the Capitol. Most of the Democratic leadership team is expected to be reelected for the new Congress.

6. G20 summit calls for more aid to Gaza, end to war in Ukraine

Leaders of the world's 20 major economies gathered once again on Tuesday with a lighter schedule after they issued a joint declaration the night before. The document, which includes calls for a global pact to combat hunger, more aid for Gaza and the end of the war in Ukraine, was heavy on generalities and short on specifics.
