1. SU student's map studies housing covenants' effect on Syracuse

It’s been banned for decades, but it’s possible it still exists in the deed to your home. Racially restrictive housing covenants were used nationwide to prevent people from different racial and religious groups from owning homes. “It had protective provisions or racial covenants that explicitly restrict ownership to people of the Caucasian race or the white race,” said Michael Kelly, a Syracuse University graduate student. While the practice has been illegal since the 1960s, under the Federal Fair Housing Act, the effects can be seen today.

2. Syracuse hoops prepares for ACC foe Miami

Syracuse hosts ACC opponent Miami on Saturday for the first time this season. The Orange and Hurricanes enter the game with identical 12-5, 3-3 conference records. The game tips off at noon. The Orange have gone 8-0 in home games. Syracuse averages 11.9 turnovers per game and is 11-2 when it turns the ball over less than its opponents.

3. Molinaro introduces bipartisan bill to prevent damage from record floods

For over a decade since extreme flooding in the Southern Tier due to Tropical Storm Lee, many have felt handcuffed when it comes to preventing damage from a weather event like this in the future. It’s caught the attention of Republican U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro, who has since introduced a bipartisan bill in the U.S. House of Representatives to improve flood preparedness.

4. New York private sector jobs up 5,800 in December, state comptroller report says

The number of private sector jobs in New York state increased over the month of December by 5,800, or 0.1%, according to preliminary figures released Thursday by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's office. The number of private sector jobs in the U.S. also increased by 0.1% last month.

5. Biden admin. forgives another $5B in student debt for 74,000 borrowers

President Joe Biden announced Friday that his administration was canceling nearly $5 billion in student loan debt for an additional 74,000 borrowers, the latest action to deliver relief in the wake of the Supreme Court striking down his larger forgiveness plan last year.

6. New Hampshire primary: Haley bet big on the Granite State, but new polls show Trump has a dominant lead

New Hampshire is where former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley plans to make her stand against former President Donald Trump, who is the far-and-away GOP primary frontrunner after his 30-point win in Iowa this week.
