Today's Big Stories
1. Search for justice continues as Child Victims Act extension ends
More than 9,000 lawsuits have been filed under the Child Victims Act. The law, which expanded the statute of limitations for child sex abuse crimes, also created a lookback window for those outside the new statute to file civil lawsuits against their alleged abusers. The window for those cases closes August 14. But as the lookback window closes, the legal fights are just beginning.
2. Vendors still looking for staffers before State Fair opens
It will be a different Fair experience this summer for a number of reasons. First and foremost, everyone will have to wear a mask inside the buildings, including vaccinated and unvaccinated guests. Grazi Zazzara, the owner of Pizze Fritte and other stands across the fairgrounds, said he has been at the Fair for 60 years, and this year is weird. He doesn’t know what to expect come August 20.
3. Good-government groups seek changes to post-Cuomo Albany
Good-government organizations on Friday called for changes to how New York's state government operates in the wake of the coming resignation of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The groups, including Reinvent Albany, Common Cause, the League of Women Voters and the New York Public Interest Research Group, urged the Democratic-led state Assembly to continue investigating the range of controversies that have dogged Cuomo.
4. New Yorkers diagnosed with HIV/AIDS could benefit from third COVID-19 vaccine dose
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized an extra dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations for people with compromised or weakened immune systems. New York state has the second-highest number of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the country and the group has been disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
5. Census data sets up redistricting fight over growing suburbs
The new detailed population data from the 2020 census will serve as the building block to redraw 429 U.S. House districts in 44 states and 7,383 state legislative districts across the U.S. The official goal is to ensure each district has roughly the same number of people. But many Republicans and Democrats also will be trying to ensure the new lines divide and combine voters in ways that make it more likely for their party’s candidates to win future elections, a process called gerrymandering.
