Onondaga County has done its part when it comes to cleaning up Onondaga Lake, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
The county legislature voted unanimously Tuesday to reach an agreement with the DEC. Under the agreement, the county will pay a $1,000 penalty.
They will also provide a list of further abatement projects, along with submitting compliance and monitoring plans and regular water quality reports.
The county has spent $700 million in the cleanup and Honeywell has spent almost $1 billion.
It's been a long process, which started with a lawsuit in the 1990s.
“The DEC has agrees with us that we’ve done what we were supposed to do, as well as the Atlantic States Legal Foundation, who originally brought the suit. Everybody agrees with what has been accomplished," said Onondaga County Legislature Chairman Dave Knapp.
With Tuesday's agreement, Onondaga Lake could be moved off the dirty lake list on onto the destination list.
The county has been moving that effort forward with the building of the Amphitheater and the Loop the Lake Trail.
