Leaders in the LaFayette Central School District are calling for more funding for the Onondaga Nation School.
The LaFayette School District actually operates and teaches students at the school, which they say is in dire need of repairs.
But because it's owned by the state, any funding for repairs would have to be set aside by the state during the budget process.
District leaders said only $3 million a year for 17 school buildings was set aside under former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and that's not enough.
"It's just not sufficient. Each building needed new roofs, so we had to wait over 10 years to get a new roof over a section of this building, and then we have sections of the roof that still need to be replaced," said LaFayette Superintenent Jeremy Belfield. "We have major building systems, the fire alarm system that's failing, water systems that need to be addressed, plumbing systems [and] electrical systems."
Two other schools on sovereign Native American Nations are Tuscarora Nation in Western New York and St. Regis Mohawk in the North Country.
