The Onondaga County Board of Elections is having to adjust its absentee ballot counting process now that eight people there have tested positive for coronavirus.

All staffers were tested Friday after the first positive case was reported.

The Board of Elections will remain closed this week and the plan is to resume absentee ballot counting on November 30 to give workers time to complete their quarantine and recover before coming back to work.

The plan needs to be approved by a judge, and the commissioners say this is uncharted territory.

"That's another reason why we want to push the starting of the absentees is logistically on November 30th most of the other counties around here will be done and if we still are having a manpower womanpower shortage, they have already reached out, our neighboring counties have been incredibly supportive and are willing to come in and help," Onondaga County Board of Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny said.

There are still about 30,000 absentee ballots that need to be counted.

The county will submit a partial certification for the presidential election on November 28.
