The coronavirus vaccine is in short supply. New York has received less than 1 million doses, according to Governor Andrew Cuomo's office.

How can you get one in your arm?

“I understand this is an emotional process," said Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon on Friday. "Many of us have been scared throughout this process and now this is our chance to punch back.”

What You Need To Know

  • Demand for the coronavirus vaccine outpaces the supply
  • New appointments will be added when the state and counties get doses
  • More than 7 million New Yorkers are eligible for a vaccine

First, check your eligibility. Right now, the groups include healthcare workers, first responders, teachers, grocery store workers and people 65 years old and older. That adds up to more than seven million New Yorkers. Soon, immunocompromised neighbors will be added to the list. State leaders said they are waiting for clarity from the CDC on who qualifies.

The state runs vaccine clinics at the New York State Fairgrounds, Binghamton University, and SUNY Poly. Most appointments are booked for the next 14 weeks.

“That doesn’t mean that when they get more vaccine in, they won’t open up appointments during those same weeks and months," said McMahon. "As we get more vaccine in, you bring in more people to administer the vaccine and you open up more appointments.”

The same principle applies at pharmacies, like Kinney Drugs, that are vaccinating seniors.

Onondaga County inoculates neighbors at the OnCenter complex. The bulk of those appointments are posted on Tuesday night after the county finds out how many doses it gets from the state.

“So there will be new vaccine in the community for new appointments next week," said McMahon. "And we’ll continue to get through this. This is going to be difficult. The demand is there.”

You can register for appointments in Onondaga County here or call 211. As for your second dose, you have to return to the clinic where you got your first dose, so you will schedule the appointment after getting your first shot.
