A new effort has been launched to try and curb coronavirus cases in urban communities.

It’s called the Don't Bring it Home Campaign and local officials and community organization leaders gathered at the Syracuse Community Health Center to kick it off Thursday.

Bags filled with masks, sanitizer, and other health information will be distributed to people being tested at the health center’s testing site on South Salina Street.

There are also plans for a targeted public health media campaign.

Organizers say it's important to work together to reach underserved communities.

"One of the reasons this virus is having a disparate impact on these communities is because of all the other issues impacting these communities,” said George Kilpatrick, a spokesman for the campaign.

“Systemic racism, oppression, lack of access to health care, poverty. So when you combine some of those factors to this issue, this is why we're seeing such an increase in cases."

The campaign will continue through September.
