President Donald Trump said he wants to see a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year.

What You Need To Know

  • The president wants a COVID-19 vaccine developed by the end of the year.

  • Operation Warp Speed will be developed by two focus groups.

  • Vaccines have historically taken years, if not decades, to develop.

  • The project will also work on developing COVID-19 treatments.

That would be fewer than 12 months after the National Institute of Health started working on one.

Yesterday, Trump said there are two new leaders of the project known as “Operation Warp Speed.” One is a scientist focused on developing a vaccine, and the other is a military official that will handle distribution. The administration is also working on getting all the necessary supplies for a large-scale vaccination effort.

"The great national project will bring together the best of American industry and innovation, the full resources of the American government, and the excellence and precision of the United States military,” Trump said.

However, vaccines have historically taken years if not decades to develop.

"The creation of a vaccine involves scientists and medical experts from around the world, and it usually requires 10 to 15 years of research before the vaccine is made available to the general public,” according to the New York State Department of Health. “The first step of this extensive process involves several years of laboratory research, in which scientists and researchers identify an antigen that can prevent a disease."

“Operation Warp Speed” will also work on developing treatments for the coronavirus.
