The Madison County Veterans Service Agency’s second annual 22-kilometer hike represents the number of veterans that die by suicide on a daily basis.

To start the hike, participants gathered at the county’s War Veterans Memorial to honor those who have been lost.

“Our agency has unfortunately experienced a couple of veterans that have committed suicide as they struggle with their challenges,” said Ron Raymer, director of the Madison County Veterans Service Agency. “Just really help shine a spotlight on a very serious, tragic situation that’s currently plaguing the veteran community.”

Throughout the hike, participants visited three other memorials.

“[It’s] an opportunity to show our support and get out there and hopefully get a positive message said on an otherwise unfortunate situation,” Raymer said.

The Veterans Service Agency not only wants to bring awareness to veteran suicide, but also honor all service members who are currently deployed.

If you are a veteran in crisis or concerned about one, the veteran crisis line is 1-800-273-8255, or you can send a text message to 838255.
