Michael Koenig, a former U.S. Justice Department federal prosecutor who also served as outside council to the Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption, told Capital Tonight that President Trump’s legal team is out of legal options in its pursuit of a legal ruling proving election fraud.
“There are no facts, there is no evidence and there is no proof to support the allegations of voter fraud that is claimed. What we saw time and time again is spectacular failure by the Trump administration to offer any facts to support their allegations,” said Koenig, who is currently a partner at the firm Hinckley Allen.
According to The New York Times, the president and his allies have brought “nearly three dozen lawsuits challenging the 2020 election.” Most have either been lost or withdrawn.
While these efforts “to undermine the integrity of the election” may have wounded some of our institutions, Koenig says the rule of law triumphed over crass political calculations.
“As messy as the process looks, in many ways, we’re also seeing the rule of law ultimately triumph,” Koenig said. “Courts are a co-equal branch of government. This is how it’s supposed to work: One branch of government checking another one.”
