Lately, I've noticed the closets in my house becoming increasingly disorganized. As I was searching for a sweater, I realized all of my summer clothes were still front and center.

What You Need To Know

  • October falls right in the middle of meteorological Autumn, which is a transitional season

  • Summertime warmth is still trying to hang on

  • The first snow of the season is not uncommon in October

  • Highly variable conditions can make it difficult to streamline your wardrobe

At first, I beat myself up for not staying on top of the changing of the seasons, but then it dawned on me. The closet chaos taking over my home was no fault of my own. The moody October weather was to blame!

Consider this. It's a frosty morning, so you grab a jacket as you head out the door. By the afternoon, the sun is out in full force, and it's a comfortable 68 degrees.

In a matter of hours, you go from having the heat on in your home to opening up the windows! Because let's face it, our days are numbered to let that fresh air in before the winter chill settles in for good.

The aforementioned is what I would consider to be a "typical" fall day. However, "typical" tends to be the exception rather than the rule.

So far this month, we have seen snow not once but twice in the Adirondacks. This is surely a sign of things to come for the rest of us.

If you grew up around here, you likely have a memory of wearing a snowsuit under your Halloween costume.

The last time measurable snow was recorded in Syracuse in October wasn't that long ago.

In October of 2016, the first snowfall of the season came on the 27th with 0.2 inches of snow reported. The year prior featured double that amount for the first snow in Syracuse, a whopping 0.4 inches of snow on October 18, 2015.

Don't put away that summer wear just yet! Did you know that we average one 80-degree day in October?

In fact, in the last four years, the last 80-degree day of the year has occurred in the month of October. Just last year on October 1st, we hit an impressive high temperature of 88 degrees.

So, don't feel bad if your flip flops are still sitting on the floor beneath your heavy jacket that you just wore the other day. If your cute fall sweater is on a hanger right next to your summer dress, it's ok. Chances are you'll need it all before the month is through.
