It should come as no surprise that June of 2020 was warmer and drier than average in Syracuse.

What You Need To Know

  • Syracuse recorded the first heat wave of the year last month

  • The month was also one of the driest on record

  • Forecasts for July point to another hot and dry month

The mean temperature was 69.3 degrees. That put us 2.6 degrees above the normal mean temperature for the month of June which is 66.7 degrees.

To give you perspective on this, 21 of the 30 days in June featured a high temperature that was above average.

Last month also brought us our first heat wave of the year. We define a heat wave as three or more days with a high temperature of 90 or greater.

We had a four-day heat wave mid-late month.

Date             High Temperature

June 20                    91

June 21                     90

June 22                    92

June 23                     91

In total, there were five days in the month of June with a high temperature of 90 or greater. The other day being earlier in the month on the 10th with an observed high of 90 degrees.

In addition to it being warmer than average, it was a month that lacked rainfall.

This past June ranked as the 10th driest June on record. Total rain for the month was 1.46 inches. That put us 1.85 inches below the average of 3.31 inches.

June of 2020 is a far cry from last year's June when we had a surplus of rain, measuring 4.39 inches.

There was a 15-day stretch this year's that lasted from the 3rd to the 17th when no measurable rain was reported.

We define measurable rain as 0.01 inch or more. During the 15 days, there were four days that registered a trace of rain. However, a trace of rain is not enough to contribute to our total rainfall and is considered negligible.

According to the Climate Prediction Center, July will be another warmer and drier than average month.

So if you were hoping to turn things around this month with more rain and relief from the heat, don't expect July to make that happen.
