If you were thinking we saw more than our fair share of rain in the month of May in Central New York, you are not alone. May 2019 will be recorded as the third wettest month of May in Syracuse.

All but eight days in May, we saw at least a trace of rain recorded at Hancock International Airport. The most rain fell on May 19, totaling 1.4 inches.

There was one other day we saw more than one inch, that was on May 13, where a total of 1.37 inches of rain fell.  May 10 came close with 0.99 inches.

In terms of the few dry days we happened to see, only two of them were consecutive: May 26 and 27. This was certainly some welcomed news, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

The grand rain total for the month came to 6.50 inches, making it the aforementioned third wettest May on record in Syracuse. This is more than twice the average May rainfall, which is 3.22 inches.

Last month’s excessive rain is still a bit off from the wettest month of May on record, which was 7.82 inches in May 2004. Ironically, the following May was the driest on record with only 0.59 inches.

As we look ahead to summer, I think many can agree we are overdue for some more sunshine. Stay tuned to your Weather on the 1s forecast as we move forward!
