Wednesday is the first day of the new school year for many districts in New York. That means many students will be waiting for the bus and there are some safety tips to remember.
Students should:
- Get to the stop 10 minutes early
- Wear bright clothing
- Stand back 15 feet from the end of the driveway
- Watch for the driver to give the signal that it's safe to cross
The start of school also means drivers will be sharing the road with school buses once again. It's important for all drivers to stop for buses that are stopped with their lights flashing. Drivers who pass stopped buses can face significant financial and legal penalties, including jail time.
Current Penalties:
- First offense: $250-$400 fine, up to 30 days in jail, five points on your license.
- Second offense: $600-$750 fine, up to 180 days in jail, five points.
- Third offense: $750-$1,000 fine, up to 180 days in jail, five points.
If you are convicted of three violations within three years, your license will be revoked for at least six months.
Stop-Arm Cameras:
A 2019 law allows school buses to use stop-arm cameras to fine vehicle owners who pass stopped school buses. These fines do not typically result in points on the driver's license or jail time.
- First violation: $250 penalty
- Second violation (within 18 months): $275 penalty
- Third violation (within 18 months): $300 penalty
School bus drivers are tasked with making sure students get to and from the classroom safely. To do their jobs, they need the cooperation of students.
Bus riders should:
- Stay in their seats
- Face forward
- Keep their feet on the floor
- Keep the noise to an indoor level
- Avoid carrying too much as there is limited space in the seats
