A new nationwide study reports that nearly 70% of seniors prefer to age in place, but many face accessibility challenges that can prevent them from doing so. Habitat for Humanity is addressing this critical need by constructing free ramps for seniors and disabled individuals, with funding generously provided by IUE-CWA.

What You Need To Know

  • Habitat for Humanity provides free ramps to seniors and disabled individuals

  • The initiative is funded by IUE-CWA, covering all costs for recipients

  • Ramps address accessbility issues, enabling aging in place
  • Volunteer teams assess and install ramps, enhancing home safety

Kenneth Taylor, a recent recipient, expressed relief as a ramp was installed at his home to accommodate his wife, who has secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.

"When I'm not home, she's stuck inside. This ramp helps her get outside and exercise, and provides emergency exits," Taylor said.

The 2022 AARP study found that 71% of seniors report accessibility issues in their homes. For many, having a ramp constructed by Habitat for Humanity is a dream come true. The ramps are built by volunteers and installed free of charge, ensuring seniors can remain in their homes safely.

To qualify, Habitat conducts a vetting process, assessing the needs of each recipient. Once approved, installation is completed swiftly, often in a single day. Bob Martino, an 82-year-old volunteer, finds joy in helping others.

"I feel lucky to do this at my age," he said.
