Up and down temperatures continue for Rochester, which is common this time of year. So far, the warmest day of 2023 was on April 5, with a high temperature of 79 degrees.
Temperatures dropped from the low 60s to low 50s the next day.
With the jet stream sagging south of our region, chilly highs in the 40s are expected for Friday and Saturday.
A warming trend will begin Easter Sunday and continue next week. In fact, we may see two or more days with highs around 80 degrees. This mild feel may last through just beyond the middle of the month.
There are a couple of pesky fronts later next week, though, that may influence our temperatures. It's not uncommon to see days this time of year where high temps are wide-ranging because of Lake Ontario.
The lake water is cold this time of year, so that a strong enough north or northeast wind off the lake can knock temperatures down significantly north of the Thruway with colder temps near the shoreline.
Temperatures can range from the 40s lakeside to the 70s in the Finger Lakes. This effect is most dramatic on cloudy days and especially days with precipitation.
If you're wondering when the last 80 degree day was in Rochester, I was surprised to find that it was back on Sept. 21. Normally, October is good for one or two of them, but not last year.
Anyway, the grass is growing and the sweet smell of lilacs will soon fill the air.
