Western New York saw its fair share of mild and chilly weather last month.

April may have been the first full month of spring, but old man winter still made an appearance from time to time.

Over a trace of snow fell three times last month, including on April Fools’ Day when a tenth of an inch stuck. Because of that, we pushed the streak of consecutive Aprils with snow in Buffalo, up to 139 years.

What You Need To Know

  • The Buffalo Airport picked up 2.2 inches of snow in April

  • The warmest temperature in April was 79 degrees, and the coldest was 28 degrees.

  • We broke one record during the month of April

However, we got the most snow of the month on April 27. We had 1.4 inches of fresh snow at the airport.

That was actually a daily record for April 27th, demolishing the old record of 0.2 inches set all the way back in 1931. Not only that, but it was the seventh greatest snow event for that late in the season.

All and all, Buffalo picked up 2.2 inches of snow last month. It was less than a half an inch below the monthly average.

As for the running snowfall total, Buffalo was sitting at 97.4 inches by the end of last month. That’s two inches above average.

In terms of rain and snow, Buffalo saw 2.79 inches of precipitation last month, which is about half an inch below average.

The wettest day was on April 25, when 0.80 inches of rain fell at the airport. The longest stretch of dry weather was three days long, and it only happened twice.

So it shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise to find out that only two days had fair sky conditions at the Buffalo Airport last month. Partly cloudy conditions took up 12 days, and the other 16 went down as cloudy.

Switching gears to temperatures now, the warmest day was April 24, when Buffalo just missed hitting 80 degrees by one degree. The coldest night was on April 18, when it got down to 28 degrees.

Overall, the temperature distribution was pretty typical for April in Buffalo, with temperatures dipping below freezing nine times. On the flip, temperatures hit at least 60 degrees ten times last month.

The monthly average came in at 45.5 degrees. Compared to the last 30 years, that ended up only being a tenth of a degree below average.

In fact, seven of the last ten Aprils finished below the monthly average.
