NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — A new playground is in the works for Niagara Falls, one that can be enjoyed by all children, regardless of physical restrictions or mobility issues.

The new playground, set to be built in Hyde Park, is designed to be accessible for children with disabilities as much as for children without them.

Members of the community provided their comments on what the playground should look like during a meeting in Niagara Falls Monday night. The Niagara Falls Community Development Department and the city’s school district are leading the effort.

“This is about designing a space for children who get left behind,” said Seth Piccirillo, director of community development. “We don’t want to do that without input.”

The playground will have basket swings and slides and will feature rubber padding that will make the area safer for children while giving parents peace of mind.

The project already has a $75,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and an offer of a $50,000 match grant from the John Oishei Foundation. Organizers also are looking for other grants to help fund the playground before having the plans approved by the city council.

They hope to have the playground open by June.
