It was an honorable day for a pediatrician in Fulton County as his family’s named was placed atop a new building at St.Mary’s Hospital. Time Warner Cable News Reporter Michael Howard has more.
AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Everyone has a story and Dr. Govind Rao’s is one of hard work. Rao is a native of India who came to Amsterdam 40 years ago and currently owns a pediatric office.
Which is one of the reasons why he is giving back.
Friday in front of a large crowd, St. Mary’s Healthcare named its new building after his families name, following his one million dollar donation to the project.
"I believe in health care and Amsterdam has been great with us and my family," said Rao.
"He’s giving back after so many years of service and continues to give back and the latest [donation] is this huge investment for us," said St Mary's Healthcare President Vic Giulianelli.
The 40,000 square foot building, now officially called the Rao Outpatient Pavilion, took three years to complete at a cost of $17 million.
"The cost of this project in today’s dollars was roughly the same as the cost of constructing St. Mary’s Hospital in the late 1970’s," said Giulianelli.
It will be home to a breast health center, medical imaging, urgent care, laboratory and more.
"CT, MRI, decoscanning, it has every imaging service that this community will need for a long time," said Giulianelli.
As for Rao he says he’s just grateful.
"Thank the lord that I’m able to help financially, which I’m very proud of," said Rao.
