PEMBROKE N.Y. — A Civil War Veteran received a memorial headstone in his hometown on Memorial Day.
Pembroke Native Private Conrad Litt was killed at the second battle of Fort Wagner in South Carolina in 1863.
The headstone now sits in the Indian Falls cemetery in Pembroke.
Litt enlisted in the 100th New York Volunteer Infantry in 1861. After his death, Litt's body was never recovered.
Litt's surviving relatives are proud to see this honor.
"I just figured, we'll do him some honor, I'm a vet myself and it's just the way things went, God led me to do this, I'm sure of it," said Clifford Anderson, a relative of Litt who organized the dedication.
Litt's headstone sits next to his parents' and his sisters' gravesites.
