The towns of Tonawanda and Amherst are among the places getting ready to open their public swimming areas.

But before you head out to take a dive, there are some things you need to know.

In Tonawanda the Lincoln Park pool is the only one opening. In the town of Amherst, two locations will open July 6: the Clearfield Community Center and North Forest Pool.

The two will be open on alternating days.

The state has not yet set a capacity for the pools in Amherst, but for now, the town is cutting the normal capacity in half.

In Tonawanda, there will be specific times for swimming. The deck will be sanitized between each scheduled swim period.

"Our nine to eleven block will be swim lessons,” said Tonawanda Councilman William Conrad. “During lunch break we will clean and sanitize, reopen from twelve to five, for recreational swim and family adult swim in the evening from six to eight." All locations are first come first serve, and will be constantly monitored to ensure social distancing.
