Waking up in the morning could soon get easier thanks to a refrigerator that will make you a cup of coffee. Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Aside from a cool blast of air to the face, what could a refrigerator possibly do to help wake you up in the morning? Well, a new one will make you a cup of coffee. Yep, the REFRIGERATOR will.

The GE Cafe Series Refrigerator has a Keurig "K-Cup" brewing system built in.

"You can load up your favorite K-Cup pod and insert it into the front of the refrigerator and select the size that you want - 6, 8 or 10 ounces - which is the same sizes as Keurig’s most popular countertop models," says Dan Goldstein of GE Refrigeration. "Once you select your size, the water heats up. It alerts you that the water is hot. You turn the knob counter clockwise and press in."

And out comes your coffee. It takes about four minutes, though you can shorten your wait by pre-setting it through a mobile app.

Aside from making coffee, it can also pour just hot water at specific temperatures for specific sizes.

As to why you would want your coffee maker built into your refrigerator, well, GE figures there are at least three good reasons. Number one, since it has its own constant water supply, you never have to fill it. Number two, that water supply is filtered so you get your cup of coffee with nice filtered water. And number three, obviously, your coffee maker is here, so that frees up precious real estate on your countertop, where your coffee maker would normally be.

So does all this functionality built into one appliance make sense?

“Especially in a smaller kitchen, when you’re pressed for space on that countertop, being able to get that big, honking dispenser off the countertop and into the refrigerator, you know, could be a real benefit," says Dan DiClerico of Consumer Reports. "You're not just paying just for the coffee maker, you’re getting a very good refrigerator on top of it. But you are paying a lot definitely.”

That price tag is around $3,300. Incidentally, Consumer Reports is quick to point out you can get a comparable refrigerator and separate coffee maker for about $1,000 less.
