A Buffalo native helped the Texas Rangers become World Series champions for the first time. Starting catcher Jonah Heim is an Amherst High School alumnus.

The Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks in five games in the Fall Classic, giving Texas its first championship since the franchise moved from Washington in 1972. Heim provided insurance runs in the ninth inning of the Series-clinching fifth game with a single that scored two runs.

Heim, the starting catcher for the American League in this year's All-Star game, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB draft, and bounced around the minor leagues before finally breaking into the bigs with the Oakland Athletics in 2020. He joined the Rangers the next season.

His coach at Amherst, Brian Davis, spoke with Spectrum News 1 on Thursday. Watch the interview to hear what he had to say about Heim and the Rangers' win.
