Patrick Mahomes is out of concussion protocol, but he’s still dealing with another injury ahead of Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Bills.

Mahomes injured his toe in last week’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Experts believe the injury to be turf toe, which is a sprain of a joint.

It doesn't sound like much, but Dr. David Ciufo, a surgeon at UR Medicine Orthopedics says the injury can be more hindering than you would think, especially for a high level athlete.

"Toe injury doesn't sound so bad but that big toe joint in a normal walk sees about 80 percent of the body weight and in athletic activities like running and jumping it’s 8 times the body weight,” Dr. Ciufo said. “That's not counting the idea of a 300 pound lineman fall on your foot while you’re trying to make that plant and cut."

If Mahomes ends up not playing, it'll be Chad Henne at quarterback for the chiefs, who Bills fans might remember from his time on the Miami dolphins a few years back.
