The New York State Public High School Athletic Association says fall sports can start practicing September 21.

But there will be caveats, and the guidelines it issued Friday were built around the state's school athletics recommendations.

Higher-risk sports, such as football and volleyball, can start non-contact practicing, but can't play games.

Section 5 will then have to decide if they'll play in the fall or wait until the spring.

Low-risk sports, like cross country, can start competing on October 19.

The athletic association says individual districts will handle guidelines for modified and junior varsity sports.
