Niagara University's new men's basketball coach has unexpectedly resigned just days before the start of the new season.
According to Patrick Beilein, he's giving up his lifelong dream and resigning effective today (Thursday).
Beilein did not give a specific reason for the decision but did release the following statement:
Patrick Beilein is the son of Cleveland Cavaliers coach John Beilein.
Former Duke basketball star and Syracuse quarterback Greg Paulus will serve as interim head coach.
“Obviously it was a very positive hire when it happened. The most important thing at this point is that, as Patrick has stated, he has to address his personal challenges. He’s doing that," said Niagara Director of Athletics Simon Gray.
"We're very proud of the opportunity to represent our basketball program, and be a part of the community and this university. It's a special place. The opportunity to turn the program around and build an identity, create a culture for long-term. That's something that was a goal of ours a few months ago, and it's going to continue to be a goal of ours," said Greg Paulus, interim head coach.
