The latest Scholar Athlete of the Week has all the right moves, on the mat and in the classroom. NY1's Matt McClure filed the following report.
For Geraldine Guese, a love for Taekwondo quickly turned into a love for wrestling.
"I feel like I'm a strong girl already, so I just want to put all my energy onto the mat. Once I get on the mat, I just feel this burst of adrenaline," Guese said.
Guese has only been on the William Cullen Bryant High School wrestling team for one season. Her coach, Peter Cardone, says her martial arts skills easily transitioned to the mat, making her a top member of the team.
"If it wasn't for her, our team would definitely not be as successful as it is," Cardone said. "She's one of the most coachable wrestlers I've ever coached so far, and I've been coaching for a pretty long time. It's always a 'Yes, coach' mentality, and when it comes to explaining stuff down to the detail, Geraldine is always paying attention and able to reciprocate exactly what we teach her."
Her leadership extends beyond the mat to the soccer field, where she was captain of that team. And while wrestling is often considered a sport for the boys, Guese says she never thought twice about joining the team.
"Don't stop yourself from doing something that you think people will say you can't do. Because in the end, you never know! Maybe you'll miss out on an opportunity. And I'm glad I didn't miss this opportunity, because I joined wrestling and it is the best," she said.
Off the mat, Guese finds time to volunteer at her local church and teach Taekwondo to children.
The honors student is also busy with her classwork. She's taking a handful of advanced placement courses and has never missed a day of school.
"She works really hard," said Francisco Hernandez, Guese's Spanish teacher. "She's always asking questions. Even at the end of the period, she'll ask a question about the lesson. She wants more, more. The thirst for knowledge is there, and it's very few who have that, and I just want to take advantage of it."
Athletics has inspired Guese to pursue a career as a physical therapist. She says she'll continue practicing martial arts and wrestling for years to come.
"Doing lots of these sports helped me to bring my confidence up and helps me to continuously have fun," she said.
So, for not being pinned down by stereotypes, Geraldine Guese is the latest Ford Lincoln of Queens/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.
