A Troy police car was involved in a fatal crash with another car overnight.
Troy police say the crash happened at the intersection of Hoosick and 15th streets just before 1 a.m. The driver of the civilian car, a 30-year-old man, died at Samaritan Hospital.
Police later Wednesday identified the officer involved as Justin Byrnes, who has been with the department since 2019. A preliminary investigation, according to police, found that Byrnes was responding in emergency-operation mode to a domestic disturbance that had been reported by a 911 caller when the crash occurred.
"Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the deceased, with the involved officer, the other first responders at the scene and all those impacted by this loss within the Troy community," Assistant Chief of Police Steven Barker said in a statement.
For a time Wednesday morning, Hoosick Street was closed in both directions at the east end of Burdett Avenue and at the west end at 13th Street. Meanwhile, 15th Street was closed at both directions at Hutton Street on the south end and Sausse Avenue on the north end.
The New York State Police and state attorney general's office, according to police, are assisting in the investigation.
